The Kansas City Chiefs enter the season in a position they’re quite familiar with: As the defending Super Bowl champions.
They will kick off the campaign on a Thursday night showdown with the Detroit Lions, unveiling their second championship banner of the Patrick Mahomes era.
Nonetheless, winning teams often have a short memory, and the Chiefs are no exception to that rule.
When asked about last season, star tight end Travis Kelce was blunt and straightforward, stating that he’s over the celebrations already, and he’s just thinking about getting the next one.
“As sick as it sounds, I’m over last year,” Kelce said. “I’m ready to keep things moving forward.”
Kelce stated that all the celebrations and the banners will obviously be a cool moment for the fans and the organization, but he’s 100% locked in on the Detroit Lions and the start of the season.
The superstar tight end is coming off the best season of his career, hauling in 110 receptions for 1,338 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, cementing himself as one of the greatest — if not the greatest — tight end of all time.
He’s expected to have a prominent role in the offense again, as the Chiefs don’t have as much talent in the receiving corps as they used to have a couple of years ago.
Andy Reid’s team wants to be the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls in almost two decades.
That won’t be easy, especially without star DT Chris Jones on the field.
But as long as they have Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce out there, it’s hard to bet against this team.
