Before anyone ever heard of Brock Purdy, the quarterback controversy in the Bay Area showcased the battle between young up-and-comer Trey Lance and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, with many anticipating the San Francisco 49ers were prepping the North Dakota State star to be the new face of the franchise.

Unfortunately for Lance, it was never meant to be in San Francisco, as an injury early in the 2022 NFL season derailed any chance of him becoming the Niners’ leader under center for the foreseeable future.

Garoppolo got his chance to get the starting job back, and then an injury ended his season, paving the way for the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to take over and never look back.

With Purdy becoming the new face of the 49ers, Lance became expendable and was ultimately traded to the Dallas Cowboys to back up Dak Prescott.

With Lance now potentially on his way to becoming a career backup, the young quarterback recently reflected on his time with the 49ers and whether he ever thinks about what might have been if San Francisco didn’t have Purdy on hand to take over.

“Nah, I really don’t. I believe everything works out exactly how it’s supposed to. That’s the truth. I believe I’m right where I’m supposed to be,” Lance said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.

Lance seems to have come to terms with the fact that certain things are out of your control and that everything happens for a reason, which is an excellent mindset for a young player who might get another shot to be a starter in the near future in Dallas or elsewhere.

As of right now, Lance will wait for an opportunity while backing up Prescott, who could eventually sign another long-term deal with the Cowboys.
