The Detroit Pistons may have accidentally thrown the Los Angeles Lakers a lifeline.
With James Borrego being a strong candidate to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers — and now also the Pistons — they were pretty much stuck with JJ Redick.
And while Redick is a very knowledgeable and respectable basketball mind, he has no coaching experience.
That’s why, with Monty Williams now available, the Lakers could and should pick up the phone to get him in a room.
At least, that’s how Udonis Haslem feels.
Talking on ESPN’s Get Up, the Miami Heat legend stated that the Lakers need to do their due diligence on Williams.

He believes that it’s their job to hire the best coach, and while no one denies that Redick could have a bright future in the league, he might not have control of the locker room.
That shouldn’t be an issue with a veteran coach like Williams.
Then again, Haslem questioned whether Williams would want to coach again in the league, or at least so quickly after being fired.
The Pistons fired Williams after one year of his contract, and they still have to pay him $65 million.
The Lakers are reportedly on the verge of signing Redick, and they want to have their new coach in place before next week’s NBA Draft.
But with this somewhat shocking turn of events, Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss might want to take some more time before making their decision.
