Veteran Cowboys WR Opens Up On His Connection With Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys had to wait six weeks to see their latest acquisition finally reach the end zone.

Brandin Cooks got off to a slow start to the season, logging just nine receptions on 19 targets for 73 yards and one rush for six yards.

Finally, the veteran wideout was able to make a big impact on the game, grabbing a fourth-quarter touchdown after a nice pass by Dak Prescott and an elite block by Tony Pollard on Monday.

Then, he had a 14-yard grab and a key 3rd-and-9 reception to help set up the game-winning field goal.

Following the game, Cooks talked about how he wants to prove to Dak Prescott that he’s still got speed and hops and can be a reliable option for the passing game:

“It was a great throw and a throw also that [Prescott] put trust in me to go out there and go make,” Cooks said, via Around The NFL and NFL.com. “I’m just thankful for the opportunity and coming up with the big play to show he can continue to trust me.”

To be fair, it hasn’t entirely been Cooks’ fault.

The Cowboys’ rather conservative offensive play-calling has prevented him from doing what he does best, which is to stretch the field vertically with his speed and acceleration.

Also, it’s not like Cooks is the only wide receiver struggling to put up big numbers in Dallas this season.

CeeDee Lamb was the only Cowboys WR or TE to log at least 36 yards in Monday night’s win, and that was against the worst passing defense in the league.

Michael Gallup has struggled to make the most of his targets and Lamb hadn’t gotten involved enough for whatever reason.

The Cowboys will continue to be a run-first kind of team, but Cook’s performance was encouraging and could lead to more opportunities in the future.
