The San Antonio Spurs will get to develop arguably the most exciting talent that basketball has ever seen.
And while most insiders predicted that Gregg Popovich would take things slowly with his star rookie, the veteran coach has given Wembanyama a long leash early in his career.
The French big man has paid him back with his stellar production on the court, especially on the defensive end of the floor.
His shot had been on and off thus far, but he gave us a glimpse of what he’s capable of as a scorer with his offensive explosion against the Phoenix Suns.
In the win, Wembanyama joined LeBron James and Kevin Durant as the only teenagers in NBA history to score at least 35 points, grab ten or more rebounds, and get at least two blocks in a single game (via StatMuse).

The No. 1 pick finished the game with 38 points, ten rebounds, two assists, one steal, two blocks, and three three-pointers on 57/50/83 shooting splits.
He hadn’t even committed a single foul until the fourth quarter, and he had some mesmerizing plays in which he showed that there’s no actual counter for a player of his size and skill.
Wemby’s mid-range game was on point, and he was knocking turnaround fadeaways and pull-up three-pointers.
Of course, not all games will look like this, and all rookies go through growing pains, but the way he took over late in the game to secure a win for his team at just 19 years old was more than impressive.
