The San Antonio Spurs need to make sure that Victor Wembanyama is on the right track.
That means they’ll have to hold him accountable and make him work twice as hard as he’s ever worked in his lifetime.
Notably, that has never been an issue with Gregg Popovich, who has a rap for getting in his players’ faces whenever they’re in need of some tough love.
His reputation precedes him, and following Wembanyama’s talks with Tony Parker and other Spurs legends, they may have shared a handful of hilarious stories about coach Pop’s temper.
That’s why he admitted to being disappointed by the fact that he hadn’t yelled at him yet a couple of months ago, but that’s no longer the case.
During his Media Day conference, Wembanyama admitted that Popovich finally yelled at him, adding that it came a little later than he expected it to happen (via Josh Paredes)
Media: “Has Pop yelled at you yet?”
Victor: “Yeah, it came later than I expected but yeah, finally. I’m glad he yelled at me.” pic.twitter.com/uTU4IxceQF

Perhaps Popovich just needed a little more time and confidence to give his new gem an earful; perhaps Wembanyama had done everything just right.
Whatever the case, the cat’s out of the bag now, and he better believe there will be a whole lot more yelling from where that came from.
The Spurs will take things slowly with their prized rookie, and that might mean protecting him from himself every now and then.
Fortunately, there’s no one better at keeping his guys in line than Coach Gregg Popovich.
