Coming into the NBA after playing professionally overseas in France, international superstar Victor Wembanyama seemed like a finished product, the same way Luka Doncic turned out to be for the Dallas Mavericks.
Wembanyama had an enormous amount of hype coming into his first season in the league, which was only comparable to what LeBron James had to deal with in 2003 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Wembanyama seemed to be handling the hype and high expectations very well for a 19-year-old kid from France, but he is dealing with an adjustment period at the NBA level.
Unfortunately for Wembanyama, there’s been a bit of a learning curve from the international game to what he’s seeing in the NBA during his rookie season, as he admits there’s more of a mental adjustment in the United States, via NBA on ESPN.
“The hardest battle isn’t the physical one, it’s more mentally,” he said.

With 50 games in the books for the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich’s squad has made little progress, even with Wembanyama on the basketball floor nightly.
The Spurs are currently in last place in the Western Conference with a record of 10-40, as the team seems to be headed toward another NBA Draft Lottery rather than the NBA playoffs.
Even though the Spurs have struggled once again this season, Wembanyama has been putting up big numbers, as he’s currently averaging a double-double with 20.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game while shooting 46.2% from the field and 30.1% from beyond the arc.
As Wembanyama adjusts to the NBA level, he’ll almost certainly continue to improve his game and become a superstar in San Antonio.
