The San Antonio Spurs may be in the middle of a rebuild, but they look like they’re ahead of schedule because of the early returns from Victor Wembanyama.
The hype for Wembanyama around draft season was beyond what anyone could have expected, yet he has somehow lived up to expectations and arguably surpassed them so far during his young NBA career.
The Spurs may be 3-5 to start the 2023-24 NBA season, but they’re much more competitive than initially anticipated.
Wembanyama has been every bit as good as advertised as he’s already a legitimate difference-maker on both ends of the floor.
San Antonio recently lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves, but it wasn’t on Wembanyama as the phenom scored 29 points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists, one steal, and four blocks.
After the game, Wembanyama was seen swapping jerseys with Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert via Hoop Central.

Wembanyama and Gobert hand each other their respective jerseys, pose for a photo, and then dap each other on the way out.
The two have a relationship as fellow countrymen, and it’s clear there’s a shared respect and admiration for each other given the jersey swap.
Gobert’s been well-aware of what Wembanyama could do for years now, and the veteran is seeing his young counterpart realize his dream of playing in the league and dominating at the professional level.
The Spurs aren’t going to be competing for a championship this season, but the franchise can rest easy knowing they’ve got their next superstar to build around.
