The New England Patriots lost their best player.

Matthew Judon was the heart and soul of their defense, and not being able to work out a deal with him was a massive blow to them.

The Atlanta Falcons made the most of the situation by sending a third-round pick to Foxboro to get their star pass rusher, but they were clearly not the only team interested in his services.

We can see that in a clip from within the Chicago Bears’ organization, showing that GM Ryan Poles actually tried to get him as well (via Ari Meirov).

The #Bears tried to trade for Matthew Judon and also offered a 3rd-round pick, just like Atlanta.

GM Ryan Poles later explained that he didn’t want to put the team in a position where they make the trade but can’t finalize a contract with the player.pic.twitter.com/ct8E1bNPPc

Notably, the Bears even made the very same offer and were willing to part ways with a third-round pick in order to get him.

However, unlike the Falcons, the Bears may not have been in a position to retain him by signing him to the kind of contract extension he was looking for, which is why Poles eventually shied away from the deal.

Thus far, Judon and the Falcons haven’t signed a new deal either, but chances are that they wouldn’t have traded such a valuable asset if they weren’t confident in their ability to get a deal done at some point.

The Bears have a solid defense and will be one of the most improved teams in the league this season, and this shows that Poles will continue to be aggressive in his pursuit of talent, even if he has to be quite cautious about the deals he makes and the return he gives away.
