Nestor Cortes was a breakout star for the New York Yankees in 2021, where he pitched 93 innings of a 2.90 ERA.

He then confirmed he was for real when he finished the 2022 campaign with a 2.44 ERA in 158.1 frames.

With two excellent seasons under his belt, he opened 2023 with hopes of being great and helping the team every five days.

But a left rotator cuff strain forced him out for a few weeks in June and July.

He returned in early August, but after a couple of starts, went down with the same injury again.

He was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list in mid-September, thus ending his season.

After the same recurring, annoying injury, Cortes seems to be healthy and in good spirits as we speak.

In the video posted by YES Network’s Twitter account, you can see Cortes throwing and tracking his progress with Trackman.

The Yankees need him to go through the offseason with no re-aggravations of the injury.

After that, they would of course love to see him in pitching shape already.

If he gets a normal offseason and goes through spring training unscathed, the Yankees will be able to count on him improving his 4.97 2023 ERA and throwing significantly more than 63.1 innings.

The team will surely bring in a pitcher or two to compete for a spot in the rotation with Cortes, but if health is on his side, he is by far one of the five best starters in the organization.
