Things got heated during Wednesday’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals.

The two teams were wrapping up a three-game series at Busch Stadium, and the Cardinals ultimately won by a final of 14-5 and prevented a three-game sweep.

Early in the game, a shouting match ensued between Willson Contreras and Madison Bumgarner.

The two exchanged several obscenities, with Contreras essentially telling the left-hander to focus on pitching instead of yelling.

Contreras worked a walk and flipped his bat, much to Bumgarner’s displeasure.

After the game, Contreras spoke to the media and discussed what took place between him and the three-time World Series champion in the third inning.

Contreras believes that Bumgarner took exception to the way he swung at a fastball.

The veteran catcher said that he wasn’t paying the lefty any mind until he heard him say something.

That was when Contreras turned around and the shouting match began.

Fortunately, order was restored very quickly.

However, Contreras did say that if a pitcher is ever going to yell at him like that again, he’ll be prepared to respond.

The slugger ultimately chalked it up to being as simple as a mind game.

Contreras said he was thankful that he got the best of Bumgarner in that at-bat and that the left-hander was ultimately done after that inning.

The Cardinals won the game to improve their record to 8-11 on the season.

They remained six games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers, who finished off a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
