Monday night was yet another poignant reminder of how poorly the 2023 season has gone for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Picked by most to win the NL Central by a wide margin, St. Louis once again owns the worst record in the National League as they now sit 8.5 games back of first place in the division and 7.5 back of the final Wild Card spot.
Perhaps nobody has felt the heat more than their newest acquisition in catcher Willson Contreras.
The Cardinals added him to replace Yadier Molina behind the plate and to bring power to a lineup that had lost Albert Pujols.
However, the former World Series champion is now hitting just .201.
After Monday’s loss to the San Francisco Giants, Contreras gave a blunt assessment of his struggles, per John Denton.

Contreras even went as far as to say that he has lost a great deal of confidence at the plate, which is a bad sign for the Cardinals.
While the starting pitching hasn’t been great, the team has seen notable improvements in that regard.
But the offense is struggling, and the same can be said for Contreras.
Contreras has hit seven home runs in 219 at-bats, and has also driven in 27 runs.
However, his OPS has dropped all the way to .645, while his slugging percentage sits at .352.
St. Louis is now 27-40 on the season.
A period of resurgence from Contreras could help the team get going in the right direction again.
But the veteran catcher has struggled immensely this season, and the Cardinals are showing no signs of getting hot.
