While the St. Louis Cardinals were relatively quiet during the offseason, one move they did make was very impactful.

The team added Willson Contreras on a five-year, $87.5 million contract to replace the retired Yadier Molina behind the plate, while also making up for the loss of Albert Pujols.

However, the team has not performed well up to this point, and strangely, they find themselves at 10-22 with the worst record in the National League.

Contreras himself is having a good season.

The 30-year-old is hitting .284 with two home runs and 14 RBI and has an OPS of .799.

But he’s not blind to the fact that the Cardinals are having a tough year as a team.

After they were swept by the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, Contreras gave a very blunt assessment of the team’s struggles and had a strong message for his teammates, as shared by team insider Katie Woo.

“ It’s not early. It’s May now. And if we don’t make adjustments now, it’s going to be a long season.” — Willson Contreras.

Contreras stated that the Cardinals can no longer use the “it’s early” excuse to justify their struggles.

He then said that if the team doesn’t make adjustments quickly, it’s going to be a very long season.

The Cardinals are quickly running out of time, but they have an opportunity to get back on track this weekend as they open up a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers.

Contreras clearly understands the magnitude of the situation and knows that the Cardinals need to pull it together quickly if they intend to make a comeback.

He also made sure to give a blunt assessment and send a strong message to his new teammates.
