With a 7.74 ERA this year, it’s fair to say that New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino has had the worst season of his career.
He looks lost on the mound, his command is non-existent, and his confidence level is at an all-time low.
Perhaps the Yankees need to consider a role change at this point, sending him to the bullpen.
Nothing has been announced regarding a new role for Severino, but the Yanks just said he won’t be starting on Wednesday.
It was his turn to take the ball.
Instead, New York is sending a reliever: Ian Hamilton.

That’s what Talkin’ Yanks (via Seth Rothman) tweeted.
Despite Hamilton showing the ability to cover multiple innings, he is not stretched out enough to pitch four or five frames.
The most likely scenario is that this will be a bullpen game for the Yankees, one in which Severino might or might not take part depending on the circumstances.
If the game is not close, perhaps manager Aaron Boone gets Severino in as a reliever to get his feet wet in the role.
It’s not completely shocking to think of Severino as a potentially useful reliever: he already fulfilled the role earlier in his career, before developing into an impact starter.
This year has been a struggle for Severino, ever since spring training: he injured his lat and was never the same upon returning.
The free-agent-to-be can still salvage some of his value if he has a good showing in the bullpen, provided he is sent there.
In the rotation, there is just not enough time for him to work on whatever issue is affecting his performance so much.
