Yankees Could Opt For A Reunion With Intriguing Free Agent

With the New York Yankees finally sending first baseman Anthony Rizzo to the injured list with concussion-like symptoms, there is now a hole in the lineup the team needs to fill.

Rizzo had been injured since May 28, back when he was one of the best first basemen in the league.

He collided with Fernando Tatis Jr. and hasn’t been the same since.

On Thursday, it was revealed that he has been dealing with recent fogginess and slower reaction times in general, forcing the Yanks to send him to the injured list in a situation that looks badly mismanaged.

The Yankees went with Jake Bauers on Thursday against the Houston Astros, and if he can hold his own defensively there (he is not really known for his glove there or in the outfield), he could become a semi-regular option.

The free agent market, however, also has another enticing option: old friend Luke Voit.

Per Fireside Yankees, when asked about if the team will consider Voit as a free agent signing, manager Aaron Boone said “we’ll see”.

Voit was recently let go by the New York Mets.

He had been playing in Syracuse, their Triple-A affiliate, hoping to be called up.

Since he wasn’t, he invoked a clause in his contract and is now free to sign with any team.

Voit already had a stint with the Yankees and even led the 2020 season in homers with 22 (the pandemic campaign).

This year with Syracuse, he accumulated 14 home runs and a cool 155 wRC+ (the league-average hitter has a 100 wRC+).

He could make sense for the Yankees if they want to keep Bauers in the outfield.
