Injuries have ravaged the New York Yankees‘ rotation in 2023.
Luis Severino, Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas are all out with injuries at the moment.
Their replacements, Jhony Brito, Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt, all have an ERA over 5.50.
That’s not going to cut it: only Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes have been effective, and no team can consistently win games with just two-fifths of the rotation pitching adequately.
Rodon won’t be back before June, and Montas could be in play in August or September if he has no setbacks.
Severino, however, is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday or Wednesday.
He is currently out with a low-grade right lat strain.
He is the closest of the three injured hurlers.
“The hope is that Luis Severino will be back in the Yankees rotation within the next 2-3 weeks, per Aaron Boone,” Talkin’ Yanks tweeted.

Severino threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Friday and is ready to start ramping back up.
He has been on the injured list since late March.
The Yankees desperately need to get healthier, and getting Severino back in late May could be a huge boost.
Last year, he posted a 3.18 ERA in 102 innings.
Injuries haven’t treated the right-hander well ever since he pitched consecutive five-WAR seasons in 2017 and 2018.
He has suffered all kinds of physical ailments ranging from lat, shoulder, groin, and elbow issues that resulted in Tommy John surgery in 2020.
The Yankees were very careful last year with his workload, and also took extreme precautions with his lat strain this time.
Now that he is pain free, he will start building back his arm strength again.
It’s certainly a welcome sight for fans.
