At one point in the offseason, the New York Yankees considered Aaron Hicks as a starter, a player scheduled to see the majority of playing time in left field.
Once the season started, the Yanks opted to go with the younger and more productive Oswaldo Cabrera.
Of the three games New York has played as of Monday afternoon, Hicks has been part of only one, and it was a pinch-hit strikeout.
He only has one plate appearance on the year.
Recently, the player told The Athletic that “he doesn’t know what his role is” and that being a reserve and not knowing when he will take the field is not what he wants.

“The role can evolve and change. I want him to be ready for every opportunity,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said regarding Hicks’ role.
Boone said he wants to make sure he puts Hicks in a position to succeed.
In the last two years, Hicks has had an OPS of .627 (2021) and .642 (2022).
The skipper explained he doesn’t want to consider Hicks, or any player for that matter, as a reserve because “our roster can evolve and change”.
“We can eventually lose a guy here and the role can change, just like that,” Boone stated.
Boone conceded that the player has expressed frustration and they have talked about it.
Hicks had a solid spring, but Cabrera was just better.
He is younger and talented, and also better defensively.
Unless something drastically changes in the upcoming days and weeks, Cabrera looks like he is the starter and Hicks’ playing time will be erratic.
