The New York Yankees made an announcement on Wednesday.
That announcement has been, to put it lightly, controversial.
They will be showing an ad on their uniforms, specifically on one of the jersey sleeves.

The Yankees said that Starr Insurance will be their new signature partner.
Fans didn’t love the fact that there will now be advertising messages among the Yankees pinstripes.
The Yanks’ uniform has been historically seen as “pure” or “sacred” for some, so seeing how the current management will now be including ads on it has triggered many supporters.
Putting advertisements on Yankees Pinstripes cheapens them.

Nauseating

As you can see, fans have gone as far as calling the Yankees cheap and using adjectives such as “nauseating”.
Others are wondering if the extra money they get will actually be used to improve the roster.
Is this the patch that pays for Ohtani?

Ads are a pretty common occurrence in other sports.
Soccer teams all over the world, for example, generate important revenue with business partners shown on their kits and uniform.
Baseball, however, has been a bit resistant to that specific change.
It’s just not that common in the sport.
Only time will tell if the Yankees’ partnership with the insurance company will last over time.
The cost in popularity is proving to be considerable, but if initiatives like these help the team increase payroll or have more money to lure impact players, it won’t matter much in the end.
For now, however, we can say that fans are against the advertising in the uniform.
Can they eventually come around and accept the idea?
Only time will tell.
