New York Yankees fans glorify their idols, but are rather unforgiving with those that are not performing well.

Throughout history, even some of their best players have been booed at some point in their careers.

Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge are two recent examples.

However, the Aaron Hicks situation is starting to become unsustainable for the player and also for the team.

During the Yankees’ 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, Hicks was showered with boos from the crowd after a strikeout.

It’s obviously not the first time they have disapproved of his presence on the team and his performance.

Hicks is a professional and he doesn’t deserve this treatment, but fans want to express themselves and there is no way to stop what’s happening other than trading or releasing him.

From 2017 to 2020, Hicks’ performance ranged from average to great, and everything was good with fans.

Since 2021, though, he has been well below-average.

In 2021, he had a .627 OPS, and the number was .642 last year.

This year, he has hit rock bottom with a .347 OPS.

Not OBP…OPS.

It has been rough to watch.

The player deserves a change of scenery, but the Yankees are currently short on outfielders after Giancarlo Stanton and Harrison Bader got injured.

Hicks is needed for depth purposes, but it’s just not working out.

As long as he is out there, he will continue to give his all despite what happens beyond the field.

Decline happens, though, and it’s a natural part of the game.

Hicks is 33 and his best days appear to be behind him.
