New York Yankees infielder Oswald Peraza has been out of the lineup since last Saturday, and fans started to wonder about his health when his name wasn’t in Monday’s lineup ahead of the game against the Boston Red Sox that was ultimately rained out.

Manager Aaron Boone then revealed that Peraza is currently showing inflammation in his left knee, preventing him from playing.

“Oswald Peraza is day to day with left knee inflammation. He had an MRI a few days ago, per Aaron Boone,” Yankees insider Bryan Hoch tweeted.

It’s at least a bit puzzling that the report said he had a MRI a few days ago, but the results were never made public.

The official designation, for now, is day to day, but there is no clue as to where he could return to the lineup or if he will return at all.

Until we know more, it’s fair to guess he could be back once the swelling goes down.

Overall, the 2023 season has been a disappointing one for Peraza.

Expected to win the shortstop gig out of spring training, he lost it to Anthony Volpe and opened the season in Triple-A.

That’s where he played most of the year, but he did have 126 plate appearances in the majors.

They weren’t overly productive: he hit .188/.278/.232 with no homers, four stolen bases, and a .510 OPS.

He is the Yankees’ best fielding shortstop, so if he can develop offensively, he should have a shot of securing an everyday spot somewhere in the infield.
