The New York Yankees will start an important series with the Houston Astros on Thursday.

There will be four crucial games for the Yankees against a great opponent to show if they are really made for great things or if the playoffs are just a pipe dream.

Inconsistency has been the common theme for the Yankees this season: they are 56-52 and 5-5 in their last 10 games.

They just can’t seem to take off.

For Thursday’s tilt, they will be sending Clarke Schmidt to the mound against Cristian Javier.

On Friday, New York will have Luis Severino and Houston will counter with Hunter Brown.

What about the weekend?

Domingo German was placed on the restricted list and won’t pitch again this season, affecting the Yankees’ plans entirely.

The original plan was for rehabbing pitcher Nestor Cortes to make a final minor league start on Wednesday and then return next week.

Now, according to team insider Bryan Hoch, Cortes is preparing to start on Saturday.

Nestor Cortes will start Saturday, Carlos Rodón on Sunday, Aaron Boone said.

Carlos Rodon, who is still trying to find his footing this year after missing most of the season with a back injury, will take the ball on Sunday.

The Astros’ plans are also in flux.

After Javier and Brown, the weekend’s plans will depend on whether manager Dusty Baker sends Justin Verlander and Jose Urquidy to the mound.

If he does, J.P. France and Framber Valdez will likely start next week, and the former’s rotation spot is in danger not because he has pitched badly, but because the logjam in the staff with Verlander’s arrival and Urquidy getting healthy.
