The Denver Nuggets have failed to successfully defend their NBA championship from last season, and while their roster remains very strong, at least on paper, there is some concern they could find themselves weakened next season.

Starting shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a key member of their roster the last two years, has a player option for next season that he can decline in order to become a free agent this summer.

If he does opt out, it would be costly for the Nuggets to keep him, and per Evan Sidery, the Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, and Orlando Magic could look to snag him.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope could earn around $20 million annually as an unrestricted free agent.

Caldwell-Pope is 31 years of age, but he appears to have plenty left in his tank after another strong showing this season.

He is an excellent 3-point shooter, a decent team defender, and a threat to get out in transition and finish, and he is thus the type of complementary player who could help a team get to the next level.

In particular, a team such as the 76ers that has had trouble going deep into the playoffs could benefit from Caldwell-Pope’s skill sets, as well as his championship experience.

If Denver does lose him, they will be hard-pressed to replace his production, especially since they don’t have a lot of depth to begin with.

That lack of depth was one reason the Minnesota Timberwolves sent them home for the summer in stunning fashion in the second round of the playoffs, and it could lead to their eventual downfall in the seasons to come.
