Cam Newton has not played an NFL snap since the 2021 season when he started five games for the Carolina Panthers.
In a recent interview, Newton listed several quarterbacks that he would backup during the 2023 season, as he is eyeing a return to the league.
Not to be outdone, Robert Griffin III came out with a statement, that he would backup any quarterback in the league if given an opportunity.
Griffin also called out Colin Kaepernick, saying “Let’s see your manifesto.”

Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season.
While Griffin’s request was likely satirical, given that both he and Kaepernick have been out of the league for several years, it was a thought-provoking gesture for many around the league.
Newton’s request to be a backup has elicited conflicting opinions, as many believe that his time in the league is now over.
For Kaepernick and Griffin, this is likely nothing more than media attention.
However, it does beg the question of, what does it take to be a backup quarterback in the NFL?
During the 2022 NFL season, there was a total of 68 quarterbacks who started games at some point during the year.
At any point, a player’s number can be called if one of their teammates gets injured.
While some organizations take pride in having a high-quality backup, others do not make this a priority.
Will Newton be able to find a place on an NFL roster, despite his lack of success in his last season?
