The Detroit Lions got some unexpected bad news on Friday.
That is their 2021 first-round draft pick Jameson Williams has been suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season.
Williams was given this suspension due to violating the league’s gambling policy.
This is similar to the suspension given to Calvin Ridley last season, except Williams was not betting on NFL games.
According to Williams’ agent, via Ian Rapoport, the wide receiver was suspended for betting on other sports inside the club’s facility.

It is a shame that Williams placed the bet in the team facility.
He could have stepped 50 feet off the premises and no suspension would be coming his way.
This is quite a costly technicality for the Lions star.
After missing most of last season recovering from an ACL injury, he will once again be forced to miss games.
Detroit was counting on Williams to play a big role in their offense in 2023.
So this is certainly a big hit to their passing game.
For the first time in a while, the Lions seem like legitimate playoff threats in the NFC.
Last season, they finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs due to a tiebreaker.
The Lions might have to rely more on their run game next season.
After adding David Montgomery, the Lions have a quality backfield duo in Montgomery and D’Andre Swift.
Williams will be a welcomed addition after his suspension, and he should give them a downfield threat upon his return.
