The Philadelphia 76ers will likely look like a much different team next season, with the team recently parting ways with veteran head coach Doc Rivers and the consensus being that James Harden will take his talents elsewhere in NBA free agency.
In the aftermath of the Rivers firing, there’s been a lot of talk about Harden’s role in the team sending him packing, with some believing the superstar guard was the reason the team chose to hand Rivers his walking papers.
With the 76ers bringing in Nick Nurse to be Rivers’ successor, it’s uncertain whether Harden wants to return to Philadelphia or try to sign with the Houston Rockets or Phoenix Suns next month.
With Harden’s future hanging in the balance in the coming weeks, Rivers made an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast and talked about the challenge of coaching the veteran scorer via NBA Central.
Doc Rivers says it was ‘challenging’ coaching James Harden
“It was challenging. More because we were fighting two things, and not like visually fighting. James was so good at playing one way, and the way I believe you have to play to win, in some ways is different because it’s… pic.twitter.com/ViTt8JfyVC

Rivers was frustrated with Harden during their short time together in Philadelphia, as the former NBA MVP could only thrive playing one way and struggled to play the way the one-time NBA champion head coach wanted him to.
With Harden now having played for four teams, and each stop ending disappointingly, it seems the superstar is more out for himself than he is for the teams he’s played for, with a value on comfortability and money over winning.
If Harden leaves to return to Houston, that will be the narrative that follows him, as he’s a player that can’t be counted on, which won’t help him in the final stretch of his career.
