The Pittsburgh Steelers may have qualified for the playoffs last season, but the organization understood they needed to make some changes to the offense to get over the hump.
To that end, the Steelers made a splash in free agency when they signed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal following his release from the Denver Broncos.
Wilson was a major disappointment in his two seasons with Denver and was even benched toward the end of the 2023 NFL season in favor of Jarrett Stidham.
Now, Wilson will get another chance to prove he’s capable of being a starter in Pittsburgh as the team traded away former first-round pick Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The team also has a new offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith who will likely try to protect Wilson by leaning on the run game like he did with the Atlanta Falcons.
While Wilson can be considered an upgrade over Pickett, he is now set to be the fourth quarterback to start for the franchise since Ben Roethlisberger retired, as pointed out by NFL on ESPN.
“Russell Wilson will become the FOURTH Steelers QB to start for them since Ben Roethlisberger retired,” they tweeted.

Head coach Mike Tomlin has squeezed out all the talent he possibly can from the current roster, but he hasn’t had a solid quarterback since Roethlisberger hung it up.
The Steelers’ offense has been stuck in the mud since and sorely needs an injection of talent at nearly every position.
Wilson might not be what he once was as a quarterback, but he can still sling the football and hopefully is able to find himself again in a new situation.
