Tyrese Haliburton is already one of the best point guards in the NBA.
But there’s a reason why young teams rarely win championships, and the Indiana Pacers just showed us that.
As great a player as he is, the lack of experience at this level certainly hurt him, as he tried to do too much down the stretch and had some costly turnovers.
That’s why, following the loss, he took the blame for how things went down, stating that coach Rick Carlisle was just trying to protect his players when he initially blamed himself (via NBA TV).
Haliburton: “That’s not on him. … I had two bad turnovers that I feel like cost us the game. … I understand he’s protecting us… but I’ll take that more than he should.” https://t.co/BnBkgZfK2t pic.twitter.com/qwvQhj5WWB

Carlisle claimed that the loss was on him, stating that he should’ve called a timeout to advance the ball and make sure to get the win from the free throw line, and he was right on point.
However, it’s also true that Haliburton should’ve stayed in control, as the Pacers were up with the clock winding down.
At the end of the day, he’s just walking his first steps in the league, and he’s going to learn from these mistakes.
He had an almost perfect game leading to that moment, and he’s going to be very good for a very long time.
The criticism of Carlisle’s decision-making is fair, as a veteran coach like him should’ve known better than to put his young point guard in that situation.
Regardless of who’s to blame, the fact of the matter is that the Pacers are down 0-1 and that they blew a game they should’ve and could’ve won.
