After taking over for Josh McDaniels, who was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders on Halloween last year, Antonio Pierce became the team’s interim head coach, with few believing he’d do well enough to even be in consideration for the top job in Sin City.
Fortunately for Pierce, he finished his short stint as interim head coach for the Raiders with a 5-4 record and winning three of his last four games of the regular season, which was just shy of making the NFL playoffs.
Along with doing an admirable job in a tough situation in Las Vegas, Pierce also won over the locker room, with the players showing nothing but respect and support for the 45-year-old.
As a result of Pierce winning over the players and showing he’s more than capable of doing the job, the Raiders are reportedly finalizing a deal with him to become the team’s new head coach for the foreseeable future, which means he’s followed in the footsteps of quite a few others that at one time worked at ESPN, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

That’s a pretty impressive list headlined by Bill Parcells, and if Pierce can have something close to the success of some of those names, he’ll have a long coaching career in the NFL and might be able to turn things around for the struggling Raiders franchise.
With Pierce nearing an agreement to become head coach, he’ll likely have his work cut out for him to fill out the coaching staff and to make a decision on what to do at the quarterback position.
