On Thursday night, the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago White Sox put together the first relevant trade of the 2023-24 offseason.
As usual, MLB insider Jeff Passan revealed the details of the deal.
“Trade news: Braves receive: left-handed reliever Aaron Bummer, under club control through 2026. White Sox receive: right-handed starter Mike Soroka, left-handed starter Jared Shuster, shortstop Braden Shewmake, infielder Nicky Lopez and right-handed starter Riley Gowens,” he tweeted.

Bummer posted a horrendous 6.79 ERA last season with the White Sox in 58.1 innings.
However, he has a 3.84 career ERA and was utterly dominant from 2019 to 2022.
The Braves think he can recapture his top form in Atlanta.
After all, underlying stats indicate he should be much, much better than he was ERA-wise this past season.
He had a 3.58 Fielding Independent Pitching, or FIP, and struck out 78 hitters in those 58.1 innings.
Control was an issue, as he walked 36 batters, but he should be much more effective in Atlanta with proper coaching and resources.
In exchange, White Sox general manager Chris Getz was able to get two cheap pitchers that could be part of the rotation in Soroka and Shuster.
Their performances in the majors weren’t good, but Soroka has been successful at the MLB level before and most of his injuries have been to his Achilles.
Soroka had a 6.40 ERA in the majors this past year, and Shuster was at 5.81.
There is a chance the former is a number three or four starter and the latter a fifth one.
Shewmake and Lopez are glove-first players.
In the end, considering Bummer’s upside, the deal could be good for both sides.
The Braves were faced with a 40-man roster crunch anyway.
