Buccaneers Insider Laments The Team’s Long QB Competition

After superstar quarterback Tom Brady decided to retire, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were forced to look for his successor, which, obviously, is no easy task.

Fortunately, it didn’t take too long for the Buccaneers to find a viable option, with the team signing veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield to come in and be the starter.

Although initially it appeared that Mayfield would be handed the starting job in Tampa Bay, that didn’t turn out to be the case, as the team openly admitted to there being a quarterback competition between the veteran and Kyle Trask.

Only a couple of weeks before the start of the regular season, the Buccaneers have finally made their decision to go with Mayfield in Week 1 on the road against the Minnesota Vikings, which sparked an interesting response from Rich Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Mayfield is the starter and we all said he would be from day one. He missed half the reps and that won’t help at Minnesota Sept. 10. It sounds like Stroud wasn’t exactly buying the quarterback competition in Tampa Bay and believed Mayfield was their guy from the moment he stepped foot in the team’s facility, which is what most people thought.

However, Stroud did admit to Trask getting better, so there was a positive for going through the motions of a potentially fake quarterback showdown in Tampa Bay.

The real question now is whether the team made the right decision and if Mayfield can hold his own as a starter again in this league after failing to do so during his last few stops in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Rams.
