Based on the way things have gone this year, the St. Louis Cardinals may not appear to be a top destination for free agents, at least on the surface.
The team entered Wednesday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres 19 games below the .500 mark, and all but out of postseason contention.
Their biggest need this offseason will be starting pitching, and it’ll be interesting to see if they choose to target the high-end arms such as Blake Snell and Aaron Nola.
St. Louis is a historically successful franchise, but radio broadcaster Mike Claiborne thinks players may want to think twice before joining the Cards, via 101 ESPN St. Louis.

Claiborne believes that the Cardinals will not be able land both Snell and Nola and isn’t sure if those pitchers would want to come to St. Louis.
He noted that every team has money to spend and that it would make sense for St. Louis to make a run at one of the top starters.
However, Claiborne notes that pitchers will have to ask themselves some important questions before signing in St. Louis.
The important things are ultimately what would draw a player to a team, and the questions heading into the offseason are whether or not the Cardinals can swing the bat and play solid defense, as well as who the catcher is going to be.
More than likely, that will be Willson Contreras.
The Cardinals do have a solid offense and Gold Glovers all over the field, but they have struggled in certain areas this season, and that may be a factor in a player’s decision to go to St. Louis or somewhere else.
