Last week, the Chicago Cubs were 45-51 and too far from the two teams that were vying for the top spot in the NL Central: the Cincinnati Reds and the Milwaukee Brewers.
They were considering trading some assets and retooling for a run at the 2024 playoffs.
Those plans have changed.
The last week and a half represent perfect proof of why teams on the fence prefer to wait until the last couple of days before the trade deadline to decide on a strategy or approach.
The Cubs have won their last eight games and are now 53-51, just 3.5 games behind the Brewers for the NL Central lead.
It has been an amazing run for Chicago.
As a result, those teams dreaming about acquiring a quality bat like Cody Bellinger will need to look elsewhere for improvements.
“This can’t come a shock at this point. Amazing, the team made it an easier decision than anyone could have guessed (I assume). Sources: Cubs tell teams Bellinger won’t be dealt,” Cubs insider Jesse Rogers tweeted.

The Cubs probably wanted Bellinger to catch fire in July so his trade value would increase.
He was so hot that not only did his value grow: he carried the team on his back and Chicago is now considered a contender in the National League.
The talented center fielder is slashing an impressive .315/.368/.540 with 15 home runs in 310 plate appearances.
The Cubs’ faith in his resurgence is paying off: they signed him to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2024 after two down seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers that resulted in that squad non-tendering him.
Now, they have a bonafide middle-of-the-order producer aiding their playoff hopes.
