Since the Boston Red Sox fired Chaim Bloom, one would think that they will be adding one person to replace him at some point, either right now or right after the end of the regular season.
It was a shocking decision, for sure, but in the end, the Red Sox are a perennial contender and multiple last-place finishes in a span of four years aren’t usually tolerated.
Now, the search for the right man begins.
With David Stearns committing his future to the New York Mets, fans have even suggested former GM Theo Epstein.
MLB insider Buster Olney has another idea.
“It’ll be interesting to see if Alex Cora emerges as one of the candidates to run Boston’s baseball operations. He has a broad range of experience, and others in the organization felt he increased his presence in the player development this year,” Olney tweeted.

It’s certainly an interesting concept, as Olney notes.
However, having increased participation in the development of a few specific players is one thing; and it’s a completely different one to oversee the entire player development staff and scouting department, negotiate contracts, deal with personnel decisions, speak with other general managers, lead a draft, and more.
Few people in the industry have more baseball knowledge and expertise than Cora.
He breathes baseball and has been around the game for decades.
He knows what it’s like to win a World Series as a player (2007) as a coach (2017) and as a manager (2018).
Obviously, the Red Sox would have to get themselves a new manager for this to work.
The idea isn’t outrageous, but it is very, very unlikely for many reasons.
