Miami Marlins left-hander Jesus Luzardo has been touted as a potential breakout candidate in 2023.

He had already posted a 3.32 ERA in 100.1 innings with the team last year, but experts believe he has the weapons and motivation to reach another level.

He certainly showed as much in his Wednesday start against the Minnesota Twins.

“Jesus Luzardo finishes the day with 10 K/1 BB/1 ER across 7 innings. He was still pumped 97 MPH in the 7th. His velo is up, his secondaries are missing bats, he looks like an ace we thought he could be as a young prospect. 41% CSW and Whiff%,” fantasy baseball analyst Chris Clegg tweeted.

Luzardo is throwing his fastball harder than ever.

He is averaging 97.4 mph on his heater in the first two games of the year, up from 96.4 mph in 2022.

His slider and changeup are both getting him swings and misses at excellent rates, and his command looks on point.

As a result, he is sporting a 0.71 ERA in 12.2 innings of work so far.

We don’t expect him to complete the season with an ERA under 1.00, but this could be his best performance yet.

A sub-3.00 ERA is certainly in the cards for the talented lefty, who is quickly developing as an ace of the Marlins.

As long as Sandy Alcantara is in town, Luzardo probably won’t be “the” unquestionable ace, but he is certainly looking like one.

Injuries and inconsistency have slowed him down in the past, so it would be great to see him keep pitching at this level for a sustained period of time.

He is very much capable of it.
