The New England Patriots seemingly have nothing to play for as they hold an AFC-worst 3-11 record.
In fact, some would say their best bet would be to lose all three of their remaining games so they could have a shot at getting the first pick in April’s draft and being able to select University of Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams.
But athletes always want to win, and the Patriots can play the role of spoiler on Sunday versus the Denver Broncos, who are fighting to get into the playoffs.
Safety Jabrill Peppers was absent from practice on Wednesday due to a hamstring ailment, and his status for Sunday’s game seems to be in question, per Mike Reiss.

Peppers: 95.3% of the defensive snaps, 73 tackles (fourth on team), 2 INT, 7 passes defended, 1 FF, 1 FR.

Peppers leads New England with seven passes defended, and he also has two interceptions and 76 tackles (51 solo) on the season.
He is an important part of head coach Bill Belichick’s defense, and he will be needed, as Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has returned to form lately.
Also absent from practice on Wednesday was tight end Hunter Henry, who is second on the team with 410 receiving yards and first with six receiving touchdowns.
The Patriots are last in points per game, and if Henry is unable to play on Christmas Eve, they will be hard-pressed to replace his production.
After this weekend, New England will wrap up their regular season with games against Buffalo Bills and New York Jets, and they will also have the opportunity to perhaps prevent Josh Allen and company from snagging a playoff spot.
