The New York Yankees might have expected an injury stint or two for starting pitcher Luis Severino.

It actually happened, as he opened the year on the injured list.

After all, he has a long history of physical ailments.

However, what they really did not expect was him being so bad when healthy.

At least we have to assume he is healthy because there haven’t been reports of injury.

What he is doing is incredibly shocking, in a bad way.

After allowing seven runs in just 2.2 innings on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles, his ERA for the season rose to 7.38 in 42.2 frames.

His last seven games have been really, really rough, according to stats expert Katie Sharp.

“Luis Severino: 37 runs and 53 hits allowed in his last 7 games. Only other Yankee pitcher in last 20 years to give up that many hits and runs in any 7-game span was A.J. Burnett in 2011,” she tweeted.

Burnett finished that season with a 5.15 ERA.

Even with that horrible streak of games he had, he was nowhere near as bad as Severino in 2023.

The right-hander is a pending free agent and has a 3.64 ERA for his career: he should have the motivation to improve and has the track record to support a potential rebound.

At some point the Yankees will need to do something, though.

He is in need of an Alek Manoah-like reset, and the sooner the organization and the pitcher realize this, the faster he could start working on his pitches, his command, and his demeanor.

It doesn’t look like a quick fix.
