College football tends to be a breeding ground for coaches, getting practice and experience before potentially moving on to the NFL.
The NFL is often seen as the upper echelon of coaching jobs.
Once coaches join the ranks of the NFL, they don’t typically go back to the college world.
However, after spending several years in the NFL, Joe Philbin has accepted a position at Ohio State, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Philbin’s coaching career began at the University of Tulane and he spent 18 total years in the collegiate ranks.
He then switched his attention to the NFL, spending nearly 10 years with the Green Bay Packers, winning a Super Bowl with them, as Thamel indicates.
Philbin’s last job in the NFL was with the Dallas Cowboys, as their offensive line coach.
Now, he’ll head back to the NCAA, a chance to be a part of Ohio State, a historic collegiate institution.
Last year, Ohio State finished the season with an 11-2 record, making their way into the CFP Semifinal.
Heartbreakingly, Ohio State fell to the future champions, losing 42-41 to the Georgia Bulldogs.
While Ohio State made an appearance in the CFP Semifinal last season, it might be a difficult path for them to get back there in 2023.
C.J. Stroud, their former starting quarterback, is now a member of the Houston Texans.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, one of their star wideouts, is also in the NFL, a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
Philbin and the rest of Ohio State’s staff will certainly have their work cut out for them this season.
