For the first time in more than a decade, the Dallas Mavericks are back in the NBA Finals.
Notably, the last time they reached that stage, Jason Kidd was also a part of the team, starting at point guard alongside Dirk Nowitzki.
A lot has transpired since those days, and while Kidd has drawn mixed reviews as a coach, it seems like he’s finally hit his stride on the sidelines.
That’s why P.J. Washington believes he should get more credit.
Talking to Jim Rome ahead of the NBA Finals, he stated that Coach Kidd was great with tactics and the Xs and Os, but also in the sense that he’s always had his team motivated, calm, and ready to perform at the highest level.

Kidd was a master at dissecting and picking opposing defenses apart in real-time, and everybody thought he would make an elite coach if he decided to go that way.
That wasn’t the case early in his coaching career, and he left plenty to be desired there.
Fast forward to today, and he’s been great at making in-game and in-series adjustments, and it’ll be an interesting chess match between him and coach Joe Mazzulla in the NBA Finals.
The Mavericks also deserve plenty of credit for the in-season trades they made to give Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving the pieces they needed around them, including Washington.
He went from one of the worst organizations in the league to starting for a championship-caliber squad, and he played a huge role in this late-season turnaround.
