The Boston Red Sox’s success in the early 2000s was thanks in large part to a core of players that consisted of David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Jason Varitek, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Kevin Youkilis, and Mike Lowell.
The team won World Series titles in 2004 and in 2007.
Varitek was behind the plate for both of those World Series titles.
Tuesday was a special day for the former Red Sox backstop, as it was his 51st birthday.
On Twitter, the Red Sox paid tribute to their former catcher and wished him a happy birthday, tweeting a picture of him holding the 2004 World Series trophy.

Varitek was a part of several great Red Sox teams.
He came up to the majors in 1997 and took the starting catcher job just a few years into his career.
Varitek was well respected for his leadership skills and was given the title of Team Captain.
He helped guide the Red Sox to the ALCS in 2003 and again the next year, playing a key role in the team’s epic comeback from 3-0 against the New York Yankees.
Boston swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 Fall Classic.
In 2007, Boston found themselves facing a 3-1 deficit in the ALCS against the Cleveland Indians.
However, the team rallied to win the series and went on to sweep the Colorado Rockies in the World Series.
For his career, Varitek owns a .256 batting average.
He also hit a total of 193 home runs and posted a WAR of 24.2.
The star catcher spent his entire career with the Red Sox.
