Anthony Edwards was feeling very good when his Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Denver Nuggets in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.
He was feeling so good, in fact, that he was already looking to the next series against the Dallas Mavericks.
Edwards boldly and confidently proclaimed that he was going to guard Kyrie Irving in the Western Conference Finals.
That comment came back to bite him on Wednesday night as Irving lit up during Game 1 against the Timberwolves, leading to a 108-105 win for Dallas.
On “First Take,” Stephen A. Smith said that Edwards’ decision to call out Irving wasn’t a good one.
“I think [Edwards] is going to deliver a championship to Minnesota one day, if not this year. … But I was like, ‘Yo, be careful what you wish for,’” Smith said.

Irving heard Edwards’ statement and he said that he used it as “motivation.”
He was definitely motivated in Game 1 and scored 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
After weeks of looking hot and cold during the playoffs, Irving showed off all his skills during Wednesday’s game.
Now everyone is wondering how Edwards will respond.
He still has his confidence and he is obviously still incredibly talented.
It might now be Edwards’ turn to feel motivated and he could use this loss as fuel to play even better in Game 2.
He wasn’t performing as well as he has been lately so fans are hoping that he turns things around in the next game and evens the series.
Edwards has now learned why it’s not smart to call out Irving but Wednesday’s loss doesn’t mean this series is over for him and the Timberwolves.
