New York Yankees fans are having the scare of their lives.

It was reported on Monday that ace Gerrit Cole was being sent for an MRI on his right elbow, citing an inability to bounce back adequately between starts.

Everybody is holding their breath while they wait in agony.

It could be a couple of weeks on the shelf, or it could be the dreaded Tommy John surgery: nobody knows.

For now, all they can do is wait.

The results won’t be revealed immediately, according to SNY.

However, Andy Martino does imply that the level of concern within the team is not as high as the one fans are feeling.

“The Yankees may not be ready to announce a diagnosis on Gerrit Cole until mid-week, but there ‘isn’t extreme concern about the situation,’ per @martinonyc: Word around the team is that Cole’s exam is ‘precautionary.’ While acknowledging than an MRI can result in any number of diagnoses, including worst-case scenarios, the Yankees don’t seem overly worried about losing Cole for a long period of time.”

“Precautionary” MRIs have turned out to be the worst-case scenario in the past.

Still, it’s at least mildly encouraging that the team doesn’t seem to be as worried as fans and that the MRI is seen as precautionary and not to confirm a suspicion.

Only time will tell if Cole will dodge the bullet, but it could be a day or two until the results of the tests are revealed.

Until they are, fans will be biting their nails: there is just no way the Yankees, as currently constructed, can withstand the loss of their ace for the entire year.

The offense and bullpen are deep(ish), but the if there is an area of the team that can’t suffer an injury, it’s the rotation.
