MLB suspended New York Yankees pitcher Jimmy Cordero for the rest of the 2023 season for violating the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.
It’s a blow to the Yankees bullpen, which has been one of the best in the league to this point.
However, and although the details of what he did aren’t public (at least not yet), we are sure the league has enough reasons to impose such a severe suspension when it sees fit.
For those who have doubts about how the Yankees will act and the detailed consequences of Cordero’s suspension, Tom Kosensky sheds some light.
“The trivial stuff: 1. Cordero will be removed from the 40-man roster; 2. He will not be paid; 3. They are not allowed to release him outright until the conclusion of the suspension,” he tweeted.

Cordero will join the restricted list.
There, he won’t collect his salary and won’t occupy a spot on the 40-man roster, allowing the Yankees to activate a pitcher from the minors (likely Carlos Rodon, who is now healthy after a few injury-related issues to open the year).
The Yankees, however, won’t be able to release him until after his suspension is over.
It’s not clear if they will release him (they didn’t do that with past offenders Aroldis Chapman and Domingo German), but they couldn’t do it at this moment even if they wanted to.
Cordero has a 3.86 ERA in 32.2 innings with the Yankees this season.
Although he has been a bit inconsistent, he has been effective most of the time.
Now, however, his future on the team is in serious doubt.
