The Minnesota Timberwolves came out a little flat in the second half of Game 1.
Anthony Edwards had his second consecutive subpar shooting night, and for the first time in the playoffs, he also got pushed over on the defensive end of the floor.
Some believe Kyrie Irving may have taken his words a little too personally and wanted to make a statement against the young shooting guard.
Following the Timberwolves’ Game 7 win over the Denver Nuggets, a hyped-up Edwards showed his excitement about the challenge of guarding Kyrie, and some thought it was a shot at the former Cleveland Cavaliers guard.
Nonetheless, when asked about that, Irving showed nothing but love and respect for his young colleague (Via Michael Scotto).
Kyrie Irving on the Anthony Edwards matchup: “As a peer, I love that. It’s nothing better. When Ant was a little younger, I’m sure he was watching me. When he was in high school, I was watching him. It’s more of those exciting matchups that I look forward to. Right after the game… pic.twitter.com/D8cIV8oqKT

Irving claimed that’s one of the things he loves about him as a player and as a person, stating that the competitiveness makes this matchup so much better.
He stated that they’ve been watching each other play for quite a while now, and at the end of the day, even though they’re battling on the court, they’re both going to give their all and compete at the highest level.
Edwards’ words shouldn’t have been taken as disrespect; he didn’t say that he would lock Kyrie up or dominate him; he just stated that he was going to guard him.
That didn’t go particularly well in their first matchup, and Irving made sure to make him remember to be careful what he wished for, but there’s still plenty of basketball to be played in this series.
