All the way through the regular season and during the first two series of the playoffs, the Minnesota Timberwolves never had any excuses.

They talked the talk and walked the walk and were ready to compete regardless of the situation.

However, we’ve reached the Western Conference Finals, and the players are banged up and have plenty of mileage under their belts.

Having to go to seven games with the Denver Nuggets, especially at this point in the season, can wear you down, and that showed for Chris Finch’s team in Game 1 vs. the Dallas Mavericks.

Following the loss, star guard Anthony Edwards claimed that he thinks his team got a little tired, which is why they came out kind of flat in the second half (Via NBA Central).

“We were just a little tired, probably.”

Whether that’s true or not, it was an interesting comment from one of the biggest trash-talkers and competitors in today’s game.

Edwards has always been quite straightforward and brutally honest, sometimes to a fault.

Even so, the Timberwolves have always marched to the beat of his drum, and they’ve fed off his contagious energy and competitiveness.

That’s why hearing him talk about being tired and seemingly making up excuses could be more worrisome than people think at first glance.

Neither Karl-Anthony Towns nor Rudy Gobert have been known for their strong characters or their ability to lead; that’s Edwards’ role.

Hopefully, the rest of the team won’t feel defeated, as all squads are worn out and banged-up at this point in the season, and you have to believe you can do it or you’ll lose before you set foot on the court.
