The Dallas Mavericks came out firing in Game 1.

Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic proved why they’re one of the most special and talented duos in recent NBA history, dominating and taking the ball to the paint over and over.

Irving, particularly, had his best game in quite a while, as he had been kind of bottled up in the second round vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He was less of a passer and started being more aggressive, and some thought he was looking to make a statement after Anthony Edwards’ comments.

Following the Game 7 win over the Denver Nuggets, Edwards looked excited and stated that he was going to be matched up with Kyrie, and some thought he was being disrespectful.

However, that wasn’t the case with Irving.

If anything, the former Cleveland Cavaliers star stated that he used it as motivation, but it was nothing personal, and he actually loved and respected that competitiveness from a young player making his name in the league (via NBA on TNT and Hoop Central).

Kyrie Irving on Anthony Edwards saying he’d defend Kyrie:

“I used it as motivation…That’s a no-fear mentality, and that’s why we love Ant.”

Edwards didn’t claim that he was going to lock up Kyrie or anything like that; he just embraced the challenge of going against one of the best scorers this game has ever seen.

The veteran got Round 1 in this matchup, and Edwards is struggling on offense right now, but we know what he’s capable of, and he’s going to bounce back.

There’s still plenty of excitement ahead of us in this series, and let’s just hope this goes to seven games.
