The NBA Summer League gives incoming rookies and second-year players a chance to display their potential and sharpen their skills each year in live competition against each other.
Although it has been around for decades, it has gotten rather big lately, and this year, interest in the league may have reached an all-time high.
The main summer league began play on Friday in Las Vegas, and the line at Thomas & Mack Center was backed up seemingly all the way out to Los Angeles.

No doubt, the reason for the huge attendance is the debut of Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot-3 French phenom who has been described as a generational talent.
He was the No. 1 pick in last month’s draft by the San Antonio Spurs, and some believe he will become an all-time great who may even change the pro game.
In addition, there is Scoot Henderson, the No. 3 pick by the Portland Trail Blazers, who is an explosive guard and has been compared to Russell Westbrook and Ja Morant.
Years ago, the summer league wasn’t a big deal unless someone such as LeBron James was participating, and it was more of a casual affair.
But over the last several years, it has become a big deal, and many of its games are now regularly shown on national television.
Some have been concerned that interest in the NBA has been waning a bit over the last few years, but the throng present for this year’s summer league is evidence that pro basketball is in outstanding shape these days.
